Developer's Forum Track

The Developer's Forum is a 2-day technical event is open to Z-Wave Alliance Full and Principal Members' engineering staff.  This event will reduce your time to market, provide you with the most current technology and development tips and tricks and is a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow Alliance members.  Highlights include:

Z-Wave Roadmap and the Context-Aware Smart Home Z-Wave 700 series platform enables a new generation of smaller, longer lifetime, longer range smart home sensors, feeding the smart home with an unprecedented resolution of contextual data. Meanwhile, AI systems enters as a central part of several smart home products. The smart home gets context-aware through the combination of sensor data and AI, opening up new levels of easy user experience and new smart home services. This presentation will cover the technical highlights of the full Z-Wave roadmap covering the full software stack, tools, hardware and focus on Z-Wave 700 incl. Smart Home AI case from Henrik Holen from MeetViva, who develops OEM AI systems for the smart home.
Step by Step Build of a Z-Wave Device (Part 1) A hands-on example of the SensorPIR project. The firmware will be edited to add a color LED to a DevKit example. The Color Switch Command class will be added and the firmware updated and verified using the CTT. This example goes thru all of the steps to go from idea to certifiable Z-Wave product.
S2 and Smart Start Taking a look at security from an application perspective, especially on controllers. What is DSK and how is it used. This presentation will be looking into comparing S2 with other technologies.
SmartStart is partly based on S2, but what extra implementation is needed?
Chat With The Z-Brains: Protocol, Specifications, & S2/Smart Start Introduce all R & D people, and then have a brief topic presentation, and then a Q & A session - Specific to: Protocol, Specifications, S2/Smart Start
IoT Device Testing Best Practices Z-Wave wireless Internet of Things (IoT) devices are hard to test! There are countless devices already in customers hands with bugs in them that make Z-Wave seem unreliable when in fact many of the issues are bugs in the device firmware. Eric Ryherd, Z-Wave expert and consultant, describes some of the failures that are still shipping today and best practices when testing your IoT device to reduce the chance your device fails in your customers hands. Simple command sequences sent one at a time by a test engineer is not representative of the real world packet storms that occur in an apartment building with complex RF reflections and multiple interfering RF networks. Your device has to work in the real world and to do that you need to simulate those terrible conditions that do not happen on the engineers desk.
Z/IP and Z-Ware Z/IP & Z-Ware Overview, Apple HomeKit and Z-Wave Public
Chat With The Z-Brains: Gateways, Z/IP, & Hardware A brief topic presentation, and then a Q & A session - Specific to: Gateways, Z/IP, Hardware
Certification Updates, Dos, and Don'ts Z-Wave Plus Version 2, Certification common mistakes and procedures
Step by Step Build of a Z-Wave Device (Part 2) A hands-on example of the SensorPIR project. The firmware will be edited to add a color LED to a DevKit example. The Color Switch Command class will be added and the firmware updated and verified using the CTT. This example goes thru all of the steps to go from idea to certifiable Z-Wave product. (Part 2, Conclusion)
Using the Tools to do Certification Testing CTT and other tools to do testing
The Only Bad Question about Certification is the One You Failed to Ask Ask anything of technical certification, market certification, and certification testing

About Developer's Forum

The purpose of the Z-Wave Alliance Developer's Forum & Unplug Fest is to provide an informal venue for members to bring their wares and test them with other vendor's equipment.   It also serves as an opportunity to share development tips and tricks and the latest information on protocol and platform extensions.  A key benefit is the opportunity for personal networking and collaboration.  Participating in the Unplug Fest has been proven to reduce time and cost-to-market as well as being an enormous learning opportunity personally and professionally for all engineers participating.

The Developer's Forum & Unplug Fest is strictly a technical event.  The Z-Wave Alliance understands the valid concerns members may have about participating with new products or prototypes of yet-to-be announced solutions.  Recognizing this, and in line with the objectives of the Unplug Fest, the Z-Wave Alliance has established a set of simple ground rules.  Only technical personnel from member companies participating in the event will be permitted into the event. Alliance members with released products or products that will be released soon are strongly encouraged to participate in person or if unable to attend to provide benchmark product samples for this event.  Interoperability is a critical requirement of consumers and a key strength of Z-Wave and the Z-Wave Alliance.  The Developer's Forum & Unplug Fest meetings are helping to secure and further extend this strength.
